Baptism and Christening Ceremony

A baby celebration is a way to welcome and introduce your child into a  community of family and friends.

It is also a time to give thanks and explain the meaning behind your child's name, dedicating him/her to God or a vocation.

The decision to baptize a child is entirely up to the parents.  Many times the baby is baptized into the faith of his/her guardians.  For those who do not claim any particular religion, but worship God in a spiritual way, they may choose to have their child baptized with light or love.

America families are composed of many religious backgrounds or none at all.   Many interfaith couples are seeking private rituals that will honor the religious philosophies of both parents.

Therefore, a customized baby celebration appeals to the multi-faith families.

The baptism ritual can mean:

Purifying the child

Welcoming the child into our world

Washing away thoughts of materiality

Spiritual birth into the Kingdom of God

Anyone at any age can be baptized, and it is not necessary that the ritual of baptism takes place in a church.

The baptism ritual can be performed in a home, hall, park, etc. and still be sacred.  However, the place you select should be special.  So when your child looks back on it, he/she will be proud of where it was held and how it was executed.

Some cultures believe that a child should be baptized within the first 2 weeks of birth.  If your child's celebration has been delayed by the time he/she reaches the terrible twos, I suggest waiting until he/she is old enough to understand boundaries and disciplined enough to appreciate the ritual and others.

However, a child with a calm disposition (and loves being the focus of attention) can have a baby celebration any time.  So good judgment is key on deciding on when your baby's ritual should happen.
